This town was settled in the mid-1800s, and in 1875 was named for either the river that joined the Ottawa at that point, or for the chalk used to mark timber int eh TOtawa RIver rafting era. A railway, lumber, pulp & paper town, now dependent on farming and the Chalk River Laboratories, Canada's top nuclear research facility.

The visitors centre offers exhibits films and tours, with a scenic view of the laboratories and
the Ottawa River. Picnic facilities open year-round. While plant tours were available in the past, for security reasons they are no longer offered.
Visitor Centre open Monday to Friday 9 am to 4 pm year round. Free admission.
Petawawa Forestry Institute
Highway 17, 5 km east of Chalk River
The first forestry research station in Canada, begun back in 1918, this facility now covers 98 square kilometres of forest. The institute has an interpretive program for visitors, and provides several self-guiding trails. Visitor Centre open June to Labour Day; Forestry Institute open year-round.
