This 16,000 resident mining town was laid out as a planned community and built in 1954, after uranium was found in the area in 1948. Elliot Lake is 42 km north of the Trans-Canada Highway, on highway 108. The city has over 170 lakes close-by, offering a wealth of summer and winter recreational opportunities.

The city was named after the nearby lake, which was named in the late 1800s by an early geologist to the area.
