  • railway Bridge over Ottawa River, just north of Mattawa This 3,000 resident community lies at the junction of the Ottawa and the Mattawa rivers. The name is the Ojibway phrase for "meeting of the waters." The town grew in initial importance as the point where voyageurs and fur traders turned west. It later grew as a major point for logging in the forests to the north and west, which were then sent downriver to Ottawa. The community, now at a major junction on the Trans-Canada Highway, offers good fishing and hunting, and has great fall colours.
