Sailboats at the Calgary Yacht CLub onLake Chestermere Lake Chestermere is a town of 7,000 people is nestled around the shores of a 300 hectare (750 acre) lake. The lake is fed by an irrigation canal from the Bow River, from the weir just below the Calgary Zoo. The lake is popular for sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, and fishing. The area is wide-open and famous for its beautiful prairie sunrises and sunsets. The town has a championship golf course, a waterslide park, and a community centre with facilities for hockey, figure skating, and curling. The town’s bike path system connects to Calgary’s reacerational pathways (following the route of the irrigation canal).

Wstern Irrigation District Bike Path From Chestermere to Calgary In 1884, Canadian Pacific Railway engineers recognized the need for an irrigation source for for farmlands east of Calgary, and built the headworks for Chestermere Lake. Lake Chestermere received offical town status in 1993.

Annual events include: Spring Carnival (late March), Summer Salute (late June)
