Newfoundland Trans-Canada Highway - Bonavista
There are three gateways to the Bonavista Peninsula: the west entrance from the #1 Trans-Canada Highway onto Route 233 at Port Blandford; the central entrance near Thorburn Lake; and the east entrance onto Route 230 at Clarenville. "Bonavista" reminds people of John Cabot, a Genovese adventurer born as Giovanni Caboto who (just five years after Columbus landed in the Caribbean) investigated what lay in the northern section of the western Atlantic. He found lots and lots of fish, and began to scoop them up, dry them and ship them to Europe. There is also the legend of Saint Brendan, who supposedly sailed west even before the Vikings. The peninsula has successful farms around Lethbridge and Musgravetown, which grow fresh vegetables. There's also good salmon fishing on the Middle Brook and Gambo rivers offer, with recreation fishing should try the Terra Nova and North West rivers.
This peninsula has lots of historic buildings: the Mockbeggar Property provincial historic site; the Ryan Premises, which tells the story of the 500-year-old east coast fishery through interactive exhibits, an aquarium, and artifacts, and also houses the Bonavista Community Museum. At Sweetland's Bank, see an almost full-scale model of John Cabot's ship "Matthew", built with late 15th-century vessel construction techniques. In the Methodist Cemetery you'll find some of the oldest gravestones in the province. Yo can also see the Cape Bonavista, lighthouse and The Dungeon.
Nearby communities are quite old. Keels was a fishing station in 1675 and appeared on maps almost a century before that. Harbour Grace has a Catholic church established here in 1815, but the community was settled in the 1680s.
The town of Trinity, where most of the old town is a national heritage community, holds several provincial historic sites. Gaspar Corte Real was exploring Newfoundland's coastal waters is said to have arrived at this section of the coast on Trinity Sunday in 1501. The English considered the port and area so valuable they built a fort here, at great expense. The remains of the fort are seen on the gravel road to the lighthouse. The nineteenth century residential architecture was solid, and there are many narrow lanes between the houses. The first smallpox vaccine in North America was administered here during the late 1680s by Dr. John Clinch, a doctor and minister.

Learn about the hard life of the lightkeepers who faithfully tended the light at
Cape Bonavista from interpreters dressed in the styles of 1870.
And in season, watch whales, icebergs and puffins just off the cape.
The lighthouse was built in 1843, adn was recently renovasted in 2000.

the area's Member of Parliament and cabinet minister in the 1950s. The home was built in the 1870s

John Clinch 1749 - 1819. Born in England, this medical and missionary pioneer came to Newfoundland in 1775 and later settled in Trinity (1783) where he died. He is noted for introducing the Jenner smallpox vaccine to British North America (1800) and for compiling a valuable glossary of Beothuck terms.
