  • About one hour's drive along the #1 Trans-Canada Highway from Stephenville, Corner Brook is located at the mouth of the Humber River, one of the best salmon rivers in the world. The Humber was first charted by Captain James Cook who traveled 6 km up the river in 1767 while beginning to map Newfoundland. One of the province's first sawmills was built here in 1894, and today the city now has one of the world's largest integrated pulp & paper mills.

Capt. Cook was based here when he charted this part of the coast in 1767, while he was in Newfoundland from 1763 to 1767. His detailed charts can still be used today, and were the first to use accurate triangulation. Cook also discovered that feeding his men citrus fruits prevented scurvy and went on to explore much of the Pacific and was killed in Hawaii in 1779.

The 25,000 population city has an Arts & Cultural Centre, a movie theatre, the pretty Mararet Bowater Park, and is close to Blow Me Down Provincial Park and Barachois Pond Provincial Park. In February, Corner Brook is famous for its Winter Carnival, the high point of winter. Marble Mountain, just a 10-minute drive east of the city, has some of the best and most reliable skiing in eastern North America for both downhill and cross-country enthusiasts, even back-country heli-skiing.
