    Built as a Centennial Project, and opened in 1967. This building has five wings joined by a centrl lobby, and houses a 1,000 seat theatre, a 76 seat theatre, three storey art gallery and library. Home to the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra. The theatre presents performing arts from all disciplines.
    Gallery open Tues.-Sun. noon-5 p.m., and Friday evenings 7-10 p.m. Free admission.



    Craft Council Gallery

    A public craft gallery located in historic Devon House. Exhibitions features contemporary and traditional fine craft while encouraging innovation, excellence and community involvement. Craft Council of Newfoundland, And Labrador.

    A notable gallery with regularly changing exhibits and periodic shows of Newfoundland and Canadian artists



    St John's also has a number of top-notch private galleries. Christina Parker Fine Art Gallery, 7 Plank Rd. (709-753-0580) showcases Newfoundland's avant-garde spectrum and is open Mon.-Fri. 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m., Sat. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Check out the Topsail Art Gallery, 13 Woodpath Rd. in Chamberlains, (709-834-3612) for traditional art. Emma Butler Gallery, 111 George St., tel. (709 739-7111), James Baird Gallery, 221 Duckworth St., tel. (709 726-9193 or 1-800-563-9100), and Pollyanna Art and Antique Gallery, 206 Duckworth St., tel. (709 726-0936) which all showcase local paintings, sculpture, and photography.

    Former British Admiralty Wireless Station, now communications museum. Exhibits on H.M.S. Calypso, Sir James Pearl, Sports Hall of Fame and Short Wave Radio Room. Meeting room or gardens available for rent.
    Open year-round; winter hours: Mon-Fri 10 am to 5 pm; summer daily 10 am to 8 pm.

    Built by members of Britain's military garrison in St. John's, the first lighthouse in Newfoundland began operating on the edge of the Narrows at the foot of the Southside Hills in 1810. The former lightkeeper's dwelling has been transformed into a museum, photo gallery, tea room and craft shop. The current lighthouse began operating in 1954. Can be booked for private parties, meetings, gatherings, etc. Guided tours of 10 or more.
    Open June - Sept noon- 5 pm, July & August from noon to 8 pm

    James J. O'mara Pharmacy Museum

    This 1895 heritage drugstore is a replica of a working apothecary, complete with set of store fixtures, shop bottles & pharmacy implements used in the preparation of medicines (pill makers).
