Ontario Trans-Canada Highway Route: along Ontario #417 and Quebec #40 between Ottawa, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec

Here is the itinerary for the 186 km along Ontario #417 and Quebec #40 between Ottawa, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec:

This segment of the highway begins between the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River, where Nicholas Street takes you into downtown along the east bank of the Canal, past University of Ottawa, the Conference Centre, and Rideau Centre. When you get close to Rideau Street, you see the Chateau Laurier Hotel ahead of you, the Parliament Building's Peace Tower to the left a bit, and the National Arts Centre and the Ottawa City Hall to your very left, across the canal. West of the Rideau River is largely English-speaking ("anglophone") portion of Ottawa, and east of the Rideau River is largely French-speaking ("francophone")portion of Ottawa.

The 206 kilometre long Rideau Canal connected Kingston and Ottawa, using the Cataraqui River from Kingston, and the Rideau River from Ottawa. The canal was built after the War of 1812, when England realized they cannot rely on the St Lawrence to move troops to defend the western interior of Upper Canada. In those days, that meant along Lake Huron and Lake Superior, which required the Rideau Canal to Lake Ontario, the Welland Canal to Lake Erie, and the Trent Canal to Lake Huron.. The Rideau Canal used 47 locks and 24 dams to climb 49 metres (160 feet) above Lake Ontario, and then fall 84 metres (275 ft) back down to the Ottawa River. Today, the canal is known as a favourite recreational waterway (from May to October) and as "the world's longest skating rink" with 5.5 kilometres of ice surface (from late December to late February).

The area east of Ottawa is flat rural land, with a shallow covering of topsoil on top of Canadian Shield. This area was settled in the first half of the 1800s,from settlers from the British Isles, as well as soldiers who were given land claims as reward for their service in the War of 1812 and the subsequent construction of the Rideau Canal. For a leisurely drive, take the Old Highway 17 along the Ottawa River, rather than the 417, and see the pace of rural life as it used to be.

Once you cross the Ottawa River's Lac des Deux Montagnes onto the Island of Montreal, you drive past the largely English-speaking suburban West Island communities. The Trans-Canada passes right by Montreal's Dorval (now Pierre Elliott Trudeau airport, ironically named for the prime minister from Montreal who funded the ill-fated Mirabel International Airport north of the city).

Next West: Mattawa to Ottawa
Montreal to Toronto (via Kingston)

Next East: Montreal to Quebec
