BC Highway Itinerary: Victoria to Nanaimo #1

What to See & Do Between Victoria and Nanaimo?

Victoria is the western end of the Trans-Canada, and once you leave this relaxed low-density community, you drive over the Malahat Highlands, with it heavily forested areas and then through coastal lowlands with wineries and farms, and the pretty towns of Chemainus, Duncan, and Ladysmith, before ending up at the ferry terminus to the mainland in Nanaimo.

British Columbia Itinerary - Victoria to Nanaimo

Victoria to Nanaimo Itinerary overview

Drive Distance: 142 km

Drive Time: 1.5 hours

#1 Trans-Canada Highway between Victoria and Nanaimo (eastbound)

#1 Trans-Canada Highway between Nanaimo and Victoria (westbound)

Driving through Greater Victoria

Mile Zero of the Tans-Canada Highway in Victoria
This stretch of the highway is the western-most segment of the Trans-Canada, though some will argue the highway ends in Tofino (as was the original intent back in 1912) on the Pacific Coast, rather than British Columbia’s capital city of Victoria as highway planners in the 1950s had decided.

From Victoria, the highway rises winds its way though a city founded for its strategic command of the mouth of the Fraser River. The road rises and falls gently and travels through several municipalities that form “Greater Victoria”. You will see magnificent oak trees that thrive in this moist temperate climate.

Fisgard Light from Fort Rodd Hill in Colwood
Butchart Gardens in beautiful Brentwood BayPlaces worth visiting include Esquimalt and Canada’s Pacific Naval Base (Surprisingly, accessible to the public), Colwood (with the Fisgard Lighthouse and adjoining Fort Rodd Hill), and Brentwood Bay (and its magnificent flower gardens), To the southwest of the Trans-Canada is the quaint fishing village of Sooke, on the southern coast of Vancouver Island.

Goldstream and Malahat Summit

Once you leave the urban/suburban areas the highway climbs over the rugged Malahat highlands, made up of volcanic rock covered by 400 year old Douglas fir trees that in colonial days were common all around Victoria. The rivers in this area have gravel beds, left behind from early glaciers and subsequent erosion, most noticeably the Goldstream River, are home to thousands of salmon.

The Malahat Summit provides a number of stunning vantage points for viewing the Saanich Inlet, which is a backwards fjord, facing into the direction of the glacial flow. Along powerline cuts, you will spot colourful Scotch broom flowering shrubs that show their full glory in early summer. There is a new observation deck at the Malahat Summit that offers magnificent views in all directions, that is worth a stop.  In the winter, fierce storms can make this summit a caution-inducing drive.

The Lush Coastal Lowlands

many totems around downtown DuncanThe Coast Lowlands between Mill Bay (with a ferry to/from Brentwood Bay) north to Nanaimo. The highways climbs up and down gentle slopes passing the towns of ChemainusDuncan, and Ladysmith, are in the “rain shadow” of the mountainous spine of Vancouver Island. Because most of the moisture that clouds have absorbed over the Pacific Ocean falls as rain when they climb the west slope of the mountains, the east slopes are mostly sunny in summer. Chemainus & Duncan are well known for their murals and their totem poles (respectively) and are well worth the stop along  the way. To the east are splendid views of many of the Gulf Islands that are vacations unto themselves.
Chemainus has many beautiful murals
The valleys have lush farmlands (many with two crops a year), tree farms and orchards, and the rivers are home to Steelhead trout of up to a metre in length. Forests in this area tend to be “second growth”, having grown since the original forests were harvested. The area is home to several wineries, and the towns are home to several craft breweries.

Killer Whale sculptures at Nanaimo's Departure Bay ferry docksNanaimo is a small city,  and is the gateway to the north end of the Island. This city is a popular retirement capital for those who have lived their lives in the harsher Canadian winters on the prairies. The harbour is splendid, the downtown is walkable, but keep in mind there are TWO FERRY DOCKS: Duke Point just south of the city and Departure Bay just north of the downtown. Make sure you know which ferry you are leaving from, and arrive a half-hour or hour before departure time.

From Nanaimo,  can also head west to Port Alberni and Tofino (which along with Ucluelet is gateway to the rugged surfing and whale-watching paradise of Pacific Rim National Park). We have an itinerary for the Nanaimo to Tofino tour.

Englishman River Falls near ParksvilleTofino harbour view, looking north to mountains
Or from Nanaimo, or you can head north (“Up-Island”) to Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Courtney & Comox, and from their to the more rugged, hilly, and forested areas around Campbell River, Port McNeil, and Port Hardy. From Port Hardy, you can take  a BC Ferry north through stunning fjords to Bella Coola and to Prince Rupert, which is on the Yellowhead Highway #16 (Yellowhead Route of the Trans-Canada Highway).

Route Detour: Visit Pacific Rim Park

See old growth forests at MacMillan Provincial Park

Goats on the Roof attraction in tourist town of Coombs, near Parksville
Head north from Nanaimo to Parksville, and then west through Coombs, the old growth Cathedral Grove forest at MacMillian Provincial Park, and past Port Alberni with its forestry museum and a forest fire fighting floatplane anchorage at Sproat Lake. Keep heading west to Pacific Rim National Park, with its amazing forests, rugged shoreline and the towns of Ucluelet and Tofino.
