Crowsnest Route: Castlegar to Cranbrook

What to See & Do between Castlegar and Cranbrook?

This 230 km (2:45 hours) stretch of the Crowsnest Highway #3 passes close to the Canada-US border, and drops from mountainous terrain into wider valleys of Kootenay Lake (part of the Lower Columbia) and the Upper Columbia. In the winter, visit great ski towns like Rossland (Red Mountain) and Kimberley.

BC-Itinerary - Crowsnest - Castlegar to Cranbrook

Castlegar Area

Crowsnest Route #3 of the Trans-Canada Highway in BC

Crowsnest Route #3 of the Trans-Canada Highway in BC

Castlegar is a good pitstop on this stretch of the Crowsnest Highway. To the NE of Castlegar is the hippy town of Nelson which lies on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake and has stunning views of the Kokanee Glacier to the north of town. Kaslo is also nearby, and if the highway is ever blocked by avalanche, there is a year-round ferry on the Lake that crosses to just north of Creston. To the south of Castlegar are the towns of Trail and Rossland, known for the Red Mountain Ski Resort (home of Olympic skier Nancy Green).

Kootenay Pass

East of Castlegar, the highway passes through Salmo, and then goes through Stagleap Provincial Park where drivers climb the Kootenay Pass 1775 m (5823 ft) and pass pretty Bridal Lake. From there the highway drops down to the wide open rich agricultural lands around Creston, at the south end of Kootenay Lake.

Cranbrook and the Columbia Valley

From Creston, the highway angles northeast, and dips south to Curzon. At this point 3 joins 95 north from the Kingsgate border crossing, passes the two Moyie Lakes, and arrives in Cranbrook. As you enter town, you are greeted by Elizabeth Lake Park to the southeast, which is also home to the Cranbrook Visitor Centre, right beside the lake. Cranbrook is the major market centre for the region, since the early railway days.

On the north side of Highway 3-95 is a large Canadian Pacific Railway railyard, as well as the Cranbrook History Centre. In the market town of Cranbrook, Highway 3/95 is the major commercial street, passing by the quaint downtown at King Street/9th Avenue. North of this junction, streets are “north” and south of this junction streets are “south”.

Highway 95 heads north to Radium, 143 km (1-1/2 hours) to the north, and Highway 95 heads in a northwesterly direction to the Kimberley-Cranbrook Regional Airport (served by major airlines) and the community of Kimberley, 30 km (1/2 hour) away, known for its ski hill and Bavarian-themed townsite.

Avalanche Closures and Kootnenay Lake Ferry

This segment of the Crowsnest Route is very rugged and has passes higher than any on the main route of the Trans-Canada Highway #1. Fortunately there is a scenic detour route, which was actually THE route before the Crowsnest Route was completed.  There is a year-round ferry across Kootenay Lake, betwen Crawford Bay on the east shore (76 km north of Creston on the 3A) and Balfour on the west shore (75 km NE of the Castlegar turnoff via the 3A through Nelson). The 8 kilometre ferry ride takes 35 minutes. There are EV charging stations at the ferry terminals.

TransCanadaHighway.com now tracks weather and avalanche closures along the Crowsnest Route on our News page or (while you are driving) on our Facebook page at https://Facebook.com/TransCanadaHighway. We realize that folks don’t travel with their laptop and WiFi on, but they almost always have their phone with Facebook.
