BC: A landslide blocked the Chilcotin River in British Columbia’s Cariboo region, upstream of Nagwentled / Farwell Canyon 285 km north of Vancouver. (upstream of Lilloet)
On Wednesday, a landslide blocked the Chilcotin River, which feeds into the Fraser River. The landslide is anout 22 kilometres upstream from the Farwell Canyon Bridge and is massive in scale: roughly 600 to 800 metres in length, 300 to 600 metres in width and about 30 metres in depth.
Chilcotin Landslide makes downstream flash floods imminent. As Chilcotin River waters rise behind the slide, eventually it will overflow and breach, quickly eroding the slide debris into a massive flow downstream.
Emergency officials said that flash floods are “imminent” and could happen within 24 or 48 hours. Potentially affecting sections of road along highways 20, 97, north of Cache Creek), and Highways 99 and # 1 along the Fraser Canyon.
