The Innu have always frequented the Mingan region for rest, seal hunting or to regain the hunting grounds of certain family clans. More recently, Ekuanitshit was an important relay for the great gathering of the summer mission of Musquaro, between Natashquan and La Romaine. The community of Ekuanitshit (Mingan) was founded in 1963 after several years of negotiation with the federal government, thanks to Innu leaders from the region such as Peter Piétacho, Damien Mestokosho and Sylvestre Mollen.
