Cupids is the first English settlement in Canada, soon celebrating the 400th anniversary of John Guy from Bristol, England established a plantation in 1610 (ten years before the pilgrims came over on the Mayflower) at what was then known as Cuper’s Cove. The first recorded birth of an English child in Newfoundland took place here.
The 1995 archaeological excavations begun have uncovered the original site of the old plantation, and artifacts recovered during this dig are found in the Cupid’s Museum. You can also visit the archaeology dig and see history being uncovered right before your eyes. In 1910 a monument to John Guy was erected, on the 300th anniversary of the town. Each summer the town celebrates the Cuper’s Cove Soiree.
