Clarenville is a cute town, with the island’s eastern Ski Resort. From here, you cross The Isthmus to get onto the Avalon Peninsula. There are coasts and fishing villages on all sides. Take the time to explore them. Take in the many unusual names, like Heart’s Desire, Paradise
From Clarenville you drive theough Goobies and Come-by-Chance onto the Avalon Penninsula. The Isthmus of Avalon, which is less than 5 km at its narrowest, joins the peninsula to the rest of the island. To the southwest, you have Plancentia Bay, and several large islands 10-30 km off in the distance. To the Northeast is Trinity Bay and many fine fishing communities, with great names like Chance Cove, Dildo, Heart’s Content.
As the isthmus widens, you arrive in Whitbourne, where you can connect to the summertime ferry to North Sydney at Argentia, or continue east to St John’s.
You can also head dsouth and take the Irish Loop drive around the southern end of the Avalon Peninsula (mcluding Placentia, St Mary’s, Trepassey, Ferryland, Witless Bay, and Bay Bulls)
