Guysborough lies at the head of Chedabucto Bay, and was settled in 1784 by disbanded troops and their families, having relocated from an earlier settlement called Port Mouton, which had burned down. The town is named for Sir Guy Carleton, then commander-in-chief of British forces in north America.
