Manitoulin Island, Ontario

Little Current, Manitoulin Island Swing Bridge

Little Current, Manitoulin Island Swing Bridge

This is the world’s largest freshwater island, with over 1600 km of coastline, and numerous lakes and rivers on the island. There are many fine sandy beaches, and quiet towns and villages. The island has two airports, Gore Bay and Manitoulin East (south of Little Current). Gore Bay is served by flights from Toronto by Pem Air and Discovery Air. Manitoulin Island is a favourite cottage area for Sudbury and Sault Ste Marie residents.

The Island is seen to the south, across the North Channel (part of Lake Huron), along a long stretch of the Trans-Canada. Manitoulin is accessible by road only from its eastern end via Espanola, and via car ferry from the south from Tobermory on the Bruce Penninsula to South Baymouth.

Lake Manitou, on the eastern part of the island, hold’s the Island’s second entry in the Guinness Book of Records, as the world’s largest lake on a freshwater island. The lake is 30 miles long and 10 miles wide. The lake’s water purity makes the lake an excellent source for trout eggs used for trout hatcheries around the province.
