This town was settled in the mid-1800s, and in 1875 was named for either the river that joined the Ottawa at that point, or for the chalk used to mark timber in theOtawa RIver rafting era. A railway, lumber, pulp & paper town, now dependent on farming and the Chalk River Laboratories, Canada’s top nuclear research facility.<BR>
