Galt has developed along both sides of the Grand River, with lots of shops and public buildings on both sides of the river. The East Side, has many heritage buildings, and is the traditional retail and commercial district. To the east, the Lower Highway 8 has a small commercial district with mostly chain stores & restaurants. West of the Grand River is the Westgate Commercial District along on Hwy. 97 (Cedar Street) with a number of chain retailers.

Hespeler Village District has benefitted from the re-alignment of Highway #24 around the core, to create a quaint shopping environment.
The area lies astride the Heritage-designated Speed River with its parkland along the riverbanks, and redeveloped industrial heritage buildings.
There is also a shopping cluster from Highway 401 south along Hespeler Road to Munch Avenue, including Cambridge Centre Mall and a “pwer centre” at Pinebush Rd.
