Temagami History

The history of Temagami, Ontario dates back over 10,000 years when Indigenous peoples first settled in the region. The area was an important hub for trade and travel, with waterways like the Temagami River and Lake.

In the late 1800s, the discovery of silver in the nearby town of Cobalt led to a mining boom in the region. This brought an influx of settlers to Temagami, including prospectors, miners, and loggers. The town grew rapidly as a result, and by the early 1900s, it was a bustling community with hotels, general stores, and other businesses.

During this time, the logging industry also flourished in Temagami, with numerous sawmills operating in the area. Logs were transported down the Temagami River to Lake Timiskaming and then down the Ottawa River to markets in Canada, the United States, and elsewhere.

In the mid-1900s, the construction of the Temagami Access Road and Highway 11 brought increased tourism to the region. The road was built during World War II to provide better access to the various mining towns across northern Ontario. Visitors came to enjoy the natural beauty of the area and participate in outdoor activities like fishing, hunting, and camping.
