Westport History
The region around Westport was inhabited by the Algonquin and Iroquois Nations who had established trade routes and lived off natural resources on the land and in the waters.
European settlers began arriving in the early 1800s, drawn to the fertile lands and natural beauty of the region. The establishment of mills along the waterways and other industries helped grow the community. Westport’s location on the shores of Upper Rideau Lake and its access to waterways played a crucial role in its development.
The Rideau Canal is a historic waterway built after the War of 1812 to connect Ottawa and Kingston, to bypass the St Lawrence River, where the US could attack military shipping. The canal brought trade, commerce, and travelers to the village.
Lumber and milling were important industries in Westport’s early history. Sawmills and gristmills were established to process timber and grain. The village’s lakefront location led to the establishment of building vessels to transport and trade along the Rideau Canal and beyond.
In the 1900s, Westport’s focus shifted towards tourism and recreation. The village’s natural beauty, access to lakes and waterways, and historic charm attracted visitors seeking outdoor activities, boating, fishing, and relaxation.
