One of the largest towns in PEI (population 2,000), it was named for George Brudenell, Earl of Cardigan and Duke of Montague. The town is a port and commercial centre, and nearby Buffaloland Provincial Park features bison and white deer.

Here in 1732 Jean Pierre Roma founded a base for control of the Gulf fisheries and for trade with France, Quebec, and the West Indies. His establishment was destroyed after the fall of Louisbourg in 1745.

Historic Island sandstone landmark houses PEI’s oldest museum, with an 18th-century militia coat, an antique high chair that converts to a rocker, early 1900s medical equipment, and a shipbuilding display.
