This town was once known as Eskwader, which is Mi’kmaq for “the fishing place,” and is still home to commercial and sport fishing, leaving from nearby Murray River.
The area was first settled in the early 1800s by Scottish immigrants, who were drawn to the region by the fertile farmland and abundant natural resources. Through the late 1800s and early 1900s, Murray Harbour became an important shipbuilding and transportation centre, with ships arriving regularly to transport goods and passengers to other parts of the island and beyond.
